IGP – KSU Companion Animal Nutrition

Course Description

Participants completing this course will become familiar with fundamentals of nutritional composition of foods, the techniques for their analysis, principles of animal nutrition, methods for evaluating nutrient requirements for animals, and various nutritional idiosyncrasies of companion animals. The course objectives are to gain a general understanding of the chemistry associated with nutrients and the measurement of these compounds found in food; learn fundamental principles of digestive physiology and nutrient metabolism as they relate to animal nutrition; gain an appreciation for methods for determining nutrition requirements and limits to our understanding; learn specific details regarding nutritional idiosyncrasies for companion animals in comparison to human and livestock species; gain an appreciation for nutrition in disease and provision of therapeutic nutrition support; explore nutritional needs of exotic birds, rodents, reptiles and aquarium fishes; discuss best practices for food provision to the various species and contrast the commercial food products with prey or native foods regarding nutritional adequacy and practicality.

Species discussed will include dogs, cats, exotic birds, pet rodents such as the rabbit, gerbil, guinea pig, and hamster, along with a brief overview of reptiles, and fresh and saltwater aquarium fishes. Students will need an elementary understanding of chemistry/biochemistry, nutrition, and animal science or husbandry.

The IGP Institute reserves the right to cancel or reschedule courses if minimum enrollment numbers are not met. If a course is canceled, participants will be refunded 100% of their tuition. If a course is rescheduled, participants will have the opportunity to have 100% of their registration fees applied to the rescheduled course or receive a full refund.

Participants who wish to cancel or transfer their registration to another employee can do so for a $100 processing fee as long as notice is received at least fifteen days prior to the course start date. Refund requests made fourteen days or less before a course start date will be not be refunded.
