Distance Education
The Department of Grain Science and Industry at Kansas State University now has the capability to offer departmental minors via distance to students in process of receiving a degree from an accredited university. This opportunity will also be available to graduates of accredited programs.
This new option will allow students at other universities, who are pursuing degrees in related programs, to expand their knowledge by taking additional coursework via distance. In addition, industry professionals interested in a concentration in feed can pursue the minor from K-State.
The courses are converted to a format compatible with distance delivery, contributing to the flexibility of the program.
K-State’s Department of Grain Science & Industry is world renowned within the grain, feed, and allied industries for the quality and innovation in its education. The department is excited to be able to deliver the same caliber of education via distance to students around the world.
The grain industry as a whole is experiencing a shortage of employees with an adequate skill set or experience. With continued growth, due to new outlets of commodities, the opportunities for employment continue to grow; there is a need to educate new hires and current employees that are not graduates of the Kansas State University’s Department of Grain Science & Industry’s current program.
A minor in Bakery Science and Management from Kansas State University will allow students to obtain basic knowledge in the baking science. We have been approached by industry companies, associations, and trade groups about making these available to non-K-State graduates so that hires without a grain based background may learn basic information to help them better understand the industry in which they are working while also allowing hires to get college credit for a minor.
Stand-alone distance delivered minor in Bakery Science and Management is subject to the following criteria:
- The application must be approved by the Grain Science and Industry Undergraduate Program Committee in order for the student to be eligible to receive the requested minor.
- Applicants must have completed all necessary graduate requirements from an accredited 4-year university.
- Complete the required courses with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater
- Take a minimum of eleven credits from KSU plus a maximum of six transfer credits approved by the department for a total of seventeen hours to complete the minor requirements.
