Grocery / Pet Store IPM

Project Title: Development and evaluation of pest management programs in retail and pet stores.

Investigator: Bh. Subramanyam

Objectives: To determine insect species associated with retail and pet stores and their distribution within stores; develop quick methods for counting insects and determining their distribution; and develop simple methods for insect management. The spread of infestation of insects within a store will be determined in a simulated store environment.

Methods: Traps and store manager surveys will be used to determine pest problems within stores. Electronic tools and software programs will be developed to get an electronic map of the store and insect distribution within a store. Practical IPM practices will be implemented after first year trapping to determine impact of implemented practices on insect numbers.

Impacts: Promote awareness and develop simple solutions for managing insect pests in retail and pet stores.
